Where Has a Year Gone?

Although the muse has not struck overly much in the past year .....

Although the muse has not struck overly much in the past year, those months have not been without interest. Quite the opposite! It would be tedious to relate the full sordid details, but suffice it to say that the attention of five consultants in three specialties, numerous clinic appointments, two outpatient biopsies, a daily slack handful of pills, several cardioversions, my first bout of gout, a planned and then cancelled removal of part of my anatomy, a further inpatient biopsy and, finally, a planned admission to the JR to fry sundry bits of my myocardium later this week, have all rather curtailed my penchant for travel. You can imagine my frustration.

I did manage to escape to Montana on three occasions, during two of which I once again experienced the clinical efficiency of ER. I only wish their billing procedures were as efficient – being chased by a large debt recovery firm in Great Falls for non-payment of three bills I had not received was not good for my blood pressure, nor for my telephone bill. The prize for unexpected efficiency and helpfulness however, goes to my travel insurance company, which has now coughed up repeatedly!

A trip to Casualty or ER to have the paddles slapped on and 200Joules shot across the ticker every couple of years allows a head-in-the-sand approach to travel, but four shocking events in nine months puts a different complexion on finding oneself in remote places – never mind inside the dollar-hungry US Health System! So, rat poison and no alcohol for four months it is. Aaargggh!

Notwithstanding the foregoing, I am in the rudest of health and cannot wait to return to whatever travel opportunities present after I have been given the all clear towards the end of this year.

Oh, and one other thing, I fell in love and got engaged - to an American.
